Medical Peel: Complete Care Guide

A medical peel has a before, during, and after. Each stage directly shapes the final outcome.

Published: Updated:

A medical peel can be very effective for treating dark spots, uneven texture, glow issues, and certain signs of sun damage. But for the procedure to actually deliver, two things matter just as much as the peel itself: proper preparation and good post-treatment recovery.

Before the peel

Depending on your skin type and the acid being used, your routine may need adjustments — pausing irritating actives, managing sun exposure, and reinforcing the skin barrier. Coming in with inflamed skin or a fresh tan increases the risk of irritation or unwanted pigmentation.

After the peel

  • Some redness, tightness, or mild flaking is normal
  • Cleanse gently
  • Prioritize moisturizing
  • Sunscreen every single day, no exceptions

What to avoid

Don't pick off peeling skin, don't exfoliate on your own, and don't act like nothing happened when it comes to sun exposure. What you do in the post-peel window accounts for a large part of the final result.

What to realistically expect

Not all peels produce the same recovery or target the same concern. Some are very superficial; others require more careful management. If you'd like to keep reading, visit our medical peel page and our guide on skin dark spots.
