Skincare Routine After a Medical Peel: Step by Step

After a peel, skin is in active renewal mode. What you do in the days that follow shapes a big part of the final result.

Published: Updated:

The days after a medical peel are critical. Your skin is in an active renewal process and what you do — or don't do — during that period directly impacts the outcome.

First 24–48 hours

Skin may be red, tight, and sensitive. During this phase, only very gentle cleansing with lukewarm water or a mild micellar solution — no rubbing. Use a fragrance-free, active-free recovery moisturizer. No makeup.

Days 3 to 7 (if flaking occurs)

Some flaking may appear — that's a sign the peel is working. Don't pick, don't exfoliate. Continue with frequent moisturizing and sunscreen every morning, even if you're staying home.

Week 2 and beyond

New skin starts showing through. You can begin reintroducing gentle actives if your doctor gives the green light. Rigorous sun protection is still non-negotiable.

Things to absolutely avoid after a peel

  • Direct sun exposure without protection.
  • Chlorinated pools or saltwater in the first few days.
  • Intense heat (sauna, very hot showers).
  • Retinol or other aggressive actives without medical guidance.
